Born in Durham, NC, a college geology field trip to the Four Corners confirmed my heart's need to move west. After a literal throw of a dart-hitting Colorado two out of three times on a map-I relocated to the Rockies. Living under a big sky within this rugged landscape serves my neurodivergent brain and fuels my creative drive.
After studying Fine Arts in college and working in ceramics for four years, I stepped away from the studio to pursue a career teaching children with disabilities and to raise my own children. I find my artistry is continuously informed by the endless river of energy in the lives of my husband and our three children. In 2021, I re-immersed myself in clay after a 30-year hiatus, spurred by my 19-year-old muse, Martha. Martha, who had already established her own home studio, encouraged me to "go for it" and buy a wheel. During her fight with cancer, I would push my wheel down the street to her home so we could throw together outside her studio.
My current work is my expression of the feminine experience capturing the essence of relational connection: community warmth, whimsical lightness and the quiet strength of backbone. I combine wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, rooted in the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. Whether working in medium-fired and salt-fired stoneware or the more refined, disciplined world of crystalline-fired porcelain, my pieces seek a balance between organic expression and structural integrity.
