Let’s Talk – A Conversation Between Form and Imagery

This two-day, hands-on workshop will center on building a personal vocabulary of imagery while considering methods of composition of that imagery onto both the wheel-thrown and hand built ceramic form.  With humor as a tool to create narratives within her work, King will introduce some non-traditional ideas about function and methods of storytelling.  Students will incorporate their own imagery by carving into slip-covered, leather hard forms (sgraffito), as well as experimenting with transfer techniques such as decals, Photo EZ silk screens and resist printing. In addition, glaze techniques that will enhance surface work will be demonstrated.  We will  learn how to skillfully adapt  this method on  endless  possible forms in our own studio work- from sculptures to tiles to  thrown forms.

A list of tools and supplies TBA.  Leather hard tiles will be available.  Students may bring in their own forms at leather hard stage as long as it is in  a grog-less, cone 5-6 clay.  We will be using B-Mix in class.

Artist Statement:

My work centers on the presentation of narrative through ceramic vessels, tile work and printmaking, either separately or combined in installation, with a feminist point of view. I am interested in mapping the ways popular culture not only reflects women’s lives, but also shapes them. It is this influence that demands critical examination.

The use of satirical humor, irony and sarcasm often provides a seductive vehicle to approach issues of gender and sexuality within my work. The combination of narrative presented on the surface, united with the intended utility of each vessel, allows a dialogue between the essence of the object and its narrative. Individually, each pot’s narrative may convey a singular thought, but when the work is considered together in a serial format, the story unfolds.

Artist Bio:

(b. 1968, Alexandria, VA, lives in Boston area).  

King is currently an active studio artist in the Boston area and is an Instructor and the Director of Education at the Ceramics Program – Office for the Arts at Harvard in Allston, MA and is a Visiting Faculty member at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.   She has held positions at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth, MA and was an Associate Professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia until 2007.  Her undergraduate work included the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA and she received her BA in Studio Art with a major in Ceramics from Connecticut College, New London, CT in 1990.  She received her MFA from University of Florida in Gainesville, FL in 1998.  She has given workshops and lectures at over seventy-five colleges, schools and art centers throughout the USA.  

The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts has featured King as an Emerging Artist in 1999, a Demonstrating Artist in 2002 and most recently a co-juror with Mark Burns for the 2012 National Student Juried Show.   Her work has been featured in Confrontational Ceramics by Judith Schwartz, Sex Pots by Paul Mathieu, The Art of Contemporary American Pottery by Kevin A. Hulch, 500 Plates and Chargers and 500 Prints on Clay by Lark Books, Teapots Transformed by Leslie Ferrin and Handbuilt Tableware by Kathy Triplett.   Her work can also be found in numerous periodicals including Ceramics: Art and Perception, Studio Potter, Clay Times, Art Papers and Ceramics Monthly.  She can be contacted via www.kathykingart.com.
