Next Steps: Pottery Student Transitioning to Independent Ceramic Artist
Wednesday 1-4 pm
Dates: August 24-October 15*
Cost: $300 (This price increase covers extra firing prices and glaze making materials.)
Instructors: Lydia Pellow and Julie Neri

Level: High-Intermediate and Advanced level
Prerequisite: High Intermediate level throwing and/or hand-building skills are required. Students must work independently in all phases of clay production.

This class is limited to 10 students.

Have you been taking pottery classes for years and are yearning to take the next steps to independence? Taught by two long term, professional potters, this intensive class will give you hands-on skills in selecting and mixing glazes, testing glazes, and loading and firing electric kilns. We will take a field trip and tour local clay studios to show you options in how to set up your own studio. We will explore ways to join artist communities and to start to sell your work. Weeks 1 and 2 during class will allow you time to work in clay, but in order to produce work for our firings, you will need to attend Practice Sessions. Plan to attend every week of class to get the full benefit of this intensive learning class. This will be a cooperative learning environment. Students in this class are expected to be independent in creation of work, as class time will not include instruction in hand building or in throwing. Cone 6 electric firings. White stoneware clay.

*Important Note about Dates and Schedule: The first two classes (8/24, 8/31) will allow for clay work. Classes from 9/7 through 10/12 will be intensive learning, with clay work being done only during the Practice Sessions. Practice sessions begin August 27. See "Tools & Supplies" page for details.
